There are a number of reasons why you may need to factory reset your Android phone. It is possible that your phone is overloaded with applications running and slow, or downloaded a recent update and is causing problems with the functionality of your phone. Or maybe you want to reset the factory settings because it sells the phone (you should always do when selling an old appliance, by the way).
Whatever the reason, here's how to reset your Android phone factory via phone settings or boot loader if the phone does not start properly at all. Given the number of different makes and models of Android devices out there, we'll use the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and S7 6P as our examples, although the process should be pretty similar in all areas.
WARNING: Performing a factory reset will completely erase all data on the phone. If you have not backed up your contacts, photos, videos, documents and anything else (preferably in the cloud, but absolutely the way), it will be sorry not to. Be warned.
How to factory reset on the phone from the settings menu
The best way to factory reset your phone is in the configuration menu. The location of the factory reset option may vary slightly depending on the exact phone you use, but once you have found the "backup and restore" menu, which should be in the clear.
In a Nexus 6P
Tap the home screen of the Setup icon or app drawer.
Swipe upward to scroll down the configuration menu.
Click Backup.
Press reset to factory data.
Tap Reset phone.
Tap Erase everything.
The phone will restart and you must go through the initial start up again until you are able to restore the data from where it supported.
In a Samsung Galaxy S7
Tap the home screen of the Setup icon or app drawer
Swipe upward to scroll down the configuration menu.
Touch backup and restore.
Swipe the screen to scroll down
Press reset to factory data.
Tap Reset phone.
Tap Erase everything.
The phone will restart and you must go through the initial start up again before you are able to restore the data.
How to factory reset on the phone with the hardware buttons
If the phone is running on some issues and are not able to boot properly, you need to enter in Android recovery mode. For this, you usually have to launch the phone while holding a volume button and power button. The exact combination of button depend on the brand of phone you use. From there it's just a matter of using the volume buttons to scroll through the menu to find the factory reset option, then press the power button to select.
In a Nexus 6P
If the phone is on, turn it off.
Hold the power button and the button to lower the volume. Instead start normally, you'll see "Home" with an arrow pointing to the power button. Here are the volume buttons are used to navigate and the Power button to select an option
Press the volume button down until you have highlighted the recovery mode.
Press the power button to start the recovery mode.
When charging your phone, you should see a screen that says, "No command" with an android robot at risk. Press and hold the power button, and press the volume up button once to load the reset menu.
Using the volume buttons to scroll through the menu, select Wipe data / factory reset.
Press the power button to select.
Highlight and select Yes to confirm the reset.
Once the process is complete, you will be recovered in the same recovery mode menu. Press the power button to select reboot system now.
The phone is switched on and the factory settings are restored. The next time you turn on the phone, which passes through the initial setup process as if it were a new phone. Once configured, you can go about restoring data wherever you had a backup.
